Polyisobutylene Succinimide (PIBSI) Quality Evaluation

Polyisobutylene succinimide (PIBSI) is one of the most important dispersant additives for heavy-duty vehicles, automotive passenger cars, and marine vessels, and the dosage is also the most in automotive engine oil.

Polyisobutylene succinimides (PIBSI) commonly are produced by reacting polyisobutylene succinic anhydrides (PIBSA) with an amine. A kind of highly refined base oil is used as a solvent during the manufacturing process and remains in the final product to maintain stability and Physico-chemical properties. They are not expected to partition into water or air because of their low water solubility and low vapor pressure.

There are three production processes for polyisobutylene succinimide: thermal addition, free radical process, and chlorination process. Different production technologies have different quality. How to evaluate the quality of polyisobutylene succinimide?

  • Check the color of sample and make sure it is clear and transparent.
  • Check the changes in the oil sample after 70 hours in the 160℃ oxidation resistance test.
  • Add sample in oils with 3%, 5% and 7% respectively, after 117 hours of testing, check which dosage will have better antioxidation and more transparent.

Through the above experimental steps, we can identify the ideal dispersant —- polyisobutylene succinimide.
